Did you know that superfoods that fight free radicals and boost the immune system also offer numerous beauty benefits when applied topically? These days, spas around the country are taking advantage of the healing properties of local produce and incorporating it into luxury facials and body treatments.
“Being alkaline, they help to work with oxygenation,” explains Leslie Johnson, spa director at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California. “Superfoods really nourish and protect the skin with a variety of different antioxidants.”
The resort’s spa has embraced the trend with a number of regular and seasonal skin treatments incorporating superfoods, including the arctic berry peptide peel and the citrus and kale facial.
“The arctic berry peptide peel is a favorite, as it offers your skin superfoods in three dynamic treatment phases during this results-oriented facial,” Johnson says of the 50-minute treatment. “Arctic berries and plants deliver exfoliation while promoting hydration and elasticity. Deep cleansing through papaya’s natural acids along with the benefits of an antioxidant-rich mix of hibiscus seeds and gardenia stem cells create an active response to improve the appearance of skin texture and elasticity. Once you receive the moisture replenishing Peptide Illuminating Complex known for reducing the appearance of inflammation, you feel and see the difference.”
The citrus and kale facial, also 50 minutes, delivers the powers of kale to your skin. “This nutrient-rich vegetable is the source of nutrition known to improve elasticity, hydration and for skin photo-protection,” Johnson says. “Kale is touted to have more antioxidants than [virtually] any other fruit or vegetable. Additional benefits are received from multiple vitamins and carotenoids to enhance collagen-boosting power.”
Many other Omni Hotels & Resorts’ spas are incorporating superfoods. For example, Arizona’s Joya Spa at Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia offers a white tea tree and ginger body experience, starting with a polish, followed by a massage and wrap that includes rosemary, cypress and lemongrass. The spa also offers a cranberry and orange body glow.
So wherever your travels take you, watch for superfoods joining the spa menu, bringing their host of healthy benefits straight to your skin.
