When preparing for an upcoming trip, maintaining health and fitness routines are mostly likely not top of mind with the majority of travelers. You review your trip itinerary, rehearse your business pitch or make reservations at the newest restaurant in town. But the truth is, keeping to your diet and exercise routine while traveling is not usually a main priority and can often lead to overindulging. In partnership with Omni Hotels & Resorts, Chef Cheryl Forberg R.D., – also Omni’s brand nutritionist – has developed a list of healthy travel tips that can help you avoid overeating and post-trip guilt by planning ahead. In her seven-part “Healthy Travel” video series, she shares recommendations on how to get organized before you leave, stay on track while on the road, and maintain your diet once you’ve reached your destination.
Before You Go:
Preparation is key. Chef Cheryl reinforces the importance of planning ahead with effortless tips to start your trip off on the right foot. For example, did you know that by drinking a bottle before you head to the airport can help curb mindless eating? Or wearing comfortable shoes will encourage you to move around more? You would be surprised how these little tricks can significantly improve your health and wellness.
Prior to your trip, do a little research on what fitness amenities your hotel offers. Omni Hotels &Resorts offers guests a complimentary Get Fit Kit that provides fitness equipment for a full body, in-room workout. This will add peace of mind and help boost your motivation knowing that your hotel has fitness options.
Finally, Chef Cheryl reiterates the importance of not skipping breakfast. You may feel like you don’t have enough time to make a well-balanced meal before your departure, but Chef Cheryl offers this recipe for an easy, healthy and portable breakfast sandwich that you can make ahead of time.
Easy Cheesy Breakfast Sandwich
• 1 light whole grain English muffin (or whole grain Sandwich Thin), split
• Olive oil cooking spray
• 1 slice uncured low fat turkey bacon (or lean Canadian-style bacon)
• 1 large egg or 2 egg whites
• 1 slice low fat or reduced fat cheddar or jack cheese
• Salt and pepper to taste
Toast muffin until it is lightly browned. While muffin toasts, heat bacon for about 1 minute in a small non-stick sauté pan.
Remove bacon from pan and place on half of the toasted muffin. Cover to keep warm.
Coat an egg ring with cooking oil spray and place in the non-stick skillet over medium heat. Pour egg into the ring. Cover pan and cook until nearly set. Run a knife or spatula around the inside edge of the ring to break the egg loose. Remove the ring. Flip egg over and cook for about 30 seconds longer or until done.
Lift egg from pan and place over bacon. While egg is piping hot, place cheese over egg and top with remaining muffin half. Serve hot.
Snacks To Go:
Lack of planning is what often influences travelers to fall out of their routines. With a little planning, it is easy to stay healthy on the go. Before your trip, Chef Cheryl suggests packing a few healthy snack options that you can take with you. This will be mutually beneficial for your wallet and waist line.
Bring small, nutritious, portable, and non-perishable snacks like a piece of fruit, whole-grain cereal or nuts that will help you stay energized, make healthy choices and save money. If you are concerned about time, purchase snack bars or make a quick trail mix that you can easily access on the go. Or, if stuck in an airport, avoid the burger and fries; instead, choose an apple with a cheese stick, or pack a turkey sandwich.
You’ve made it to your destination, but your healthy choices shouldn’t end here. Chef Cheryl suggests talking to hotel concierges who are a wealth of information on the hotel’s amenities and also nearby destinations. Inquire about stair access and where the closest farmers market is. Knowing that healthy options are available will help you make better decisions during your stay.
Also, find ways to stay active during your trip: join a walking tour, visit the hotel gym or check out a resort activity. For example, Omni Mount Washington Resort offers zip-lining excursions while scenic walking tours are available at Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa. Exercising on the road is not hard when you build a workout into your routine every day. When you do, it becomes habit. You don’t have to do your full fitness routine, as even the simple exercises will make a difference. It all adds up.
Enjoy your upcoming trip and healthy traveling!
