The most important thing to know before you buy anything is what kind of art appeals to you.
One top collector says, almost counter intuitively, that the best way to start collecting art is to hold off on purchasing any right away. Just go to museums and gallery openings and look around.
Take note of what appeals to you. Jot down some of the artists’ names. Also, read books and catalogues. Museums and auction house catalogues offer ways to learn about a wide variety of artists.
To deepen their knowledge, some collectors audit art history courses at local universities. Others tap the curators of local art museums for advice and input. Joining the membership groups of local art organizations is also a great way to meet other art lovers. Plus, seeing art in a museum or gallery is one thing, seeing the work in someone’s home collection can really help you begin to understand how it all takes shape.
Once you have begun to collect works, most serious collectors say they make a decision to focus their collection around a period, style or group of artists. Here is where an art consultant can be beneficial. Art consultants help shape collections, plus they stay connected to the art world and can help you find work that is available in other cities. Importantly, good art consultants also have relationships with top-notch galleries.
So if your remodeling project or new home has left you with a space crying out for something original, find a catalogue, visit a museum, befriend a curator. Start figuring out what you like and start building your own private art gallery.
The Art of Texas
The glamorous new Omni in downtown Dallas has taken the idea of hotel art to another level. In all, the Omni Dallas Hotel has over 7,000 pieces
of original, iconic Dallas art throughout the guest rooms, public spaces, culinary venues and the hotel’s common areas. That includes work from over 150 local artists with four to six unique, locally inspired painted, photography and mix-media pieces in each of its more than 1,001 guest rooms.
And if you see something you love, the computers in the gift shop — Collections — feature an online catalogue of artwork in the hotel and by the artists which are available to purchase, even the pieces in your guest room.
