This year, make Charlotte your classroom. The Queen City has a wide array of cultural and historic experiences to enhance your current curriculum. From in-person experiences like ArtWalksCLT, the Carolina Raptor Center, Chef Alyssa’s baking and culinary classes and the birthplace of President James Polk, PBS Charlotte’s At-Home Learning and Google’s partnership with 13 Charlotte museums and institutions, there’s truly something for every age and interest.

ArtWalksCLT offers a series of free self-guided artwalks that provide artist info, story, key art terms and an opportunity to connect to an artwork. From art gazing in Charlotte's historic neighborhoods to wandering down alleys and peeking around corners, each artwalk is a walking adventure full of discovery.

Carolina Raptor Center

Take a walk on the wild side at Carolina Raptor Center's Raptor Trail which features eagles, vultures, hawks, and falcons. Formal and informal education programs include monthly homeschool days, avian home adventures and enrichment projects.

Chef Alyssa's Kitchen

Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen offers culinary and baking classes for kids (ages 7–12) and teens (ages 12–18), as well as parent-child classes for kids 7 and up. The classes use local and organic ingredients and participants will learn valuable skills and techniques while discovering just how much fun they can have in the kitchen. Along with these events, Chef Alyssa's Kitchen also hosts hands-on cooking class for adults held throughout the week in the evenings.

Freedom and Independence Parks Demonstration Gardens

Freedom and Independence Parks Demonstration Gardens

Located near the Mahlon Adams Pavilion at Cumberland and Lilac avenues, the Freedom Park Demonstration Garden makes good use of undulating berms, providing distinctly different planting strategies with sun or shade exposures. You’ll also find a bee hotel designed and built by a team of scouts for the garden. The Independence Park Demonstration Garden is a sunny-side garden, located at the Cooperative Extension office off 7th Street. Vegetables and herbs grown there are donated to the Charlotte Urban Ministry's Soup Kitchen. Both gardens are designed, planted and maintained by Master Gardener volunteers of Mecklenburg County who can often be seen working in the gardens, teaching workshops at various events, and answering questions online and in person. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram. You can also sign-up for their monthly gardening newsletter.
