Southwest Road Trip – Desert-to-Mountains

Share:

Load up your adventure-mobile, we’re heading to the mountains – a majestic sight whether you’re enjoying the view from the top or admiring them from afar.

The Phoenix-metro area is the perfect location to begin your southwest road trip with easy access to a wide variety of day trips and weekend trips to choose from, the hardest choice is deciding which direction to go.

Begin in the Heart of Scottsdale

While you’re dreaming up your vacation game plan, begin your getaway at Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia in the heart of Scottsdale. This local favorite is the gem of Paradise Valley, allowing you to discover European charm without a passport amidst sweeping views of Camelback mountain. No need to plan your Insta filters for this stay, the ambiance of white-washed villages and sun-drenched hills of Andalusia, Spain will have your friends swooning from any angle.

Embrace self-care and let your worries melt away with a rejuvenating day at Joya Spa, followed by sips of Omni’s Summer of Spritz treats in a cabana at Kasbah pool. Pro tip: You’ll want to stick around for sunset and feast your eyes on Camelback Mountain’s signature fiery red glow.

For dinner, indulge in a modern take on Mexican cuisine experience at Centro Lounge, located only a few steps away from the pool. For those who enjoy a crisp adult beverage – pair your meal with a Citrus Path Hazy IPA. This exclusive collaboration with local Arizona brewery, Huss Brewing, includes Meyer lemons, Valencia oranges and ruby grapefruits all hand-picked from Omni Montelucia’s Citrus Path.

Before embarking to your next destination, explore local treasures like Desert Botanical Garden, local vintage clothing shops or book one of Arizona’s many outdoor adventure excursions.

Take the Path Below

From Scottsdale, there are truly endless southwest road trip adventures awaiting both near and far. We recommend you head less than two hours away to Omni Tucson National Resort, an Arizona retreat boasting everything you need for the perfect escape, remotely tucked into the Catalina mountains.

Soak up sun and upbeat vibes at Sweetwater pool or reign in your focus at one of two PGA pro-choice golf courses. When evening strikes, treat yourself to a decadent dinner on property at the legendary Bob’s Steak & Chop House. During dinner, keep your eyes on the sky as the vast Catalina Mountains contrasted with Tucson’s infamous cotton candy skies at sunset will leave you in awe.

Don’t miss the chance to venture Tucson and explore the flourishing food and beverage scene. Charro Vida up the road pays homage to the Mediterranean and Sonoran Desert heritage, offering unique health-conscious twists on ingredients you won’t find anywhere else (try the yucca fries!).

Tucson takes full advantage of outdoor recreation, boasting popular hiking trails for all skill levels. This city is also home to the Rillito River bike path. Known by locals as “The Loop,” this biking stretch includes 131 miles of paths linking throughout communities.

The Land of Enchantment

Next up is the hot air ballooning capital of the world. Albuquerque offers a variety of exhilarating activities or you can sit back and enjoy the natural beauty of the southwest.

If you are looking for outdoor adventures opt for a white-water rafting tour on the Rio Grande or the ample hiking and biking trails that exist. For unforgettable views, take to the skies with a hot air balloon ride. The Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway is another way to enjoy Albuquerque’s natural beauty from above.

Any visit to ABQ requires a meal featuring staples like frybread-style sopapillas or one that is skillfully prepared with New Mexico’s famous chile peppers. If you are looking for something to quench your thirst after a day of adventure, make a pit stop to the Brewery District for a sampling of local craft beer.

Drive A Mile High

A true adventure enthusiast won’t regret taking an off the beaten path scenic trip up to Broomfield, ‘Colorful Colorado’. Set aside time to leisurely enjoy this journey. The trek is just over 7 hours from Albuquerque and it is the final stop on our southwest road trip.

When you arrive in Broomfield, check-in at Omni Interlocken Hotel where you can unwind poolside at your choice of two outdoor heated pools open year-round. Afterwards, head up to the Tap Room and Terrace Restaurant and kick back with a Colorado handcrafted beer. In Broomfield, you can explore local walking and hiking trails or swing your clubs at one of three Omni Interlocken’s nine-hole golf courses – Eldorado, Vista or Sunshine course.

During your stay, break your trip into mini itineraries by location. Boulder is a picturesque city in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains residing a mere 15 minutes Northwest. Sightsee breathtaking mirrored lakes, taste farm-to-table cuisine and sip at one of many breweries, including favorites like Left Hand Brewing Company.

The next day, head down the road and visit Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a must-see famous venue, which currently offers socially distanced yoga classes designed for your mental reboot. Visit Downtown Denver for a fun trendy side of Colorado’s culture, complete with colorful wall murals and Michelin star quality cuisine.
