Attorney James Buchanan, future President of the United States, visits the Springs for the first time. As President, Buchanan established the Bedford Springs as the "Summer White House". James K. Polk comes the first sitting president to experience the springs, describing it as “(T)he walk and grounds are neat and well shaded, and everything about the establishment has the appearance of comfort.
