As its name implies, the Old Course has a significant past with the work of three Grand Masters of American golf course design and one notable contemporary shaping more than a century of its history. In 1895, Spencer Oldham laid out the original 18-hole course around Red Oaks Lake, including select holes believed among the first on American soil. In 1912, A.W. Tillinghast’s redesign reduced the number of holes by half. Then it was Donald Ross’s turn: his redesign added the back nine holes and completed the course in the 1920s.
In 2007 the Old Course re-opened following a refurbishment by Forse Design, which included new greens complexes with U.S.G.A. specified construction, the creation of a flood plain with 11 acres of wetlands and complete re-grassing with bentgrass on greens, tees and fairways.
With Forse’s restoration completed in time for the reopening of the Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa in 2007, the awards began rolling in. Along with its most recent award, Golfweek also ranked the Old Course as the #1 Resort Course in Pennsylvania.
