About Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
French-born artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) is celebrated for his work as a painter, printmaker and illustrator who captured the spirit and emotion of the bell époque, the “beautiful era” depicting the exciting and decadent life in Paris. When the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret opened, Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to produce a series of posters, which began his career creating art for Parisian nightclubs. In his 20-year career, he created thousands of artworks both to memorialize his friends and to advertise their venues. Some of his most famous subjects include dancers Louise Weber, creator of the French Can-Can and Jane Avril, one of the most recognizable names of the Parisian nightlife. Toulouse-Lautrec is recognized as one of the greatest painters of the post-impressionist period.
