6th Street

6th Street in Downtown Austin

Arguably the most well known (and fun) street in Texas, the seven blocks of 6th Street between Congress and IH 35 is the center-piece for most of Austin's music and art festivals. Its diverse entertainment options including bars, restaurants, music venues, tattoo parlours, art galleries and more help draw an endless stream of students, locals, out-of-towners and festival revelers. Often compared to New Orlean's Bourbon Street, it's the place to be year-round especially during big events. Staple events like the Austin Mardi Gras celebration, SXSW and 6th Street's Halloween celebration showcase the diversity and personality of the city. For those who want to stay within walking distance of 6th Street Entertainment District, the Omni Austin Hotel Downtown is located just a block away.

Things to Know Before You Go to Sixth Street

  • Local authorities shut down the street for pedestrians only on weekends and during festivals
  • If you park your car on the street during the day or evening, it will be towed to allow for pedestrian use. Visitors should park off-street when planning to stay later than dinner
  • 5th and 4th Street run parallel to 6th Street and offer progressively quieter entertainment options
