The home of Thomas Jefferson has been a highly recognized tourist attraction since the Thomas Jefferson Foundation purchased it in 1923. Monticello sits atop a picturesque mountain in Albemarle County where is it able to bask in all of its historic glory.

You do not have to be a history buff in order to truly appreciate a tour of Jefferson's estate. Those who solely admire architecture and landscaping will also not be disappointed! The Monticello staff conducts tours for all ages. They also have different types of tours in order to cater to each specific demographic.

Things to Know Before You Visit Monticello


  • You should generally allow for your visit to last two to three hours in order to truly indulge in what there is to offer. 
  • Monticello is open every day of the week, including Sundays. The estate is only closed on Christmas, but hours of operation do vary by season. House Tours run several times each hour throughout the day. 
  • Onsite parking is free and a shuttle service is provided to take you to the top of the mountain where Monticello sits.
